De-constructing the Reality Labyrinth - Introduction

Reality is a Labyrinth, not Maze (see the picture below). The rule is simple: automatically we were threw into the entrance after birth. We then traverse through the seven roundabouts. Along the way we might choose to stop, to watch, to collect rewards, or to dwell. Occasionally few might decide to follow the mysterious drums they heard from nowhere, and to go deeper. After many twists and turns there is the center. From there, an even more difficult pathway will lead to the exit.

The exit happens to be adjacent to entrance. Both hang the the same (labyrinth) instruction: "You are the world" (J. Krishnamurti). 

The followings are blueprint of this Reality Labyrinth:

Four states of consciousness

The Mandukya Upanishad describes four states of consciousness, namely waking (jågrat), dreaming (svapna), and deep sleep (suṣupti),[web 1][web 2] which correspond to the Three Bodies Doctrine:

    The first state is the waking state, in which we are aware of our daily world. "It is described as outward-knowing (bahish-prajnya), gross (sthula) and universal (vaishvanara)".[web 2] This is the gross body.

   The second state is the dreaming mind. "It is described as inward-knowing (antah-prajnya), subtle (pravivikta) and burning (taijasa)".[web 2] This is the subtle body.

    The third state is the state of deep sleep. In this state the underlying ground of concsiousness is undistracted, "the Lord of all (sarv'-eshvara), the knower of all (sarva-jnya), the inner controller (antar-yami), the source of all (yonih sarvasya), the origin and dissolution of created things (prabhav'-apyayau hi bhutanam)".[web 2] This is the causal body.

  The fourth factor is Turiya, pure consciousness. It is the background that underlies and transcends the three common states of consciousness.[web 3] [web 4] In this consciousness both absolute and relative, saguna brahman and Nirguna Brahman, are transcended.[30] It is the true state of experience of the infinite (ananta) and non-different (advaita/abheda), free from the dualistic experience which results from the attempts to conceptualise ( vipalka) reality.[31] It is the state in which ajativada, non-origination, is apprehended.

The Feng-Shei Code

"The Feng-Shei Code" is a Hidden Reality game I invented and play. Similar to "The Da Vinci Code" or "Angels and Demons", you navigate the city or even a world journey to follow your symbolic clues, using principles from geomancy and anthropology. The key is to uncover your personal symbology. The Universe acts like an open world game, while each person hold private key to decode the publicly displayed messages. Usually it takes a life time to master one's symbol vocabularies. In a sense, we are like an A.I. in training by the Universe. Through life events, quests and especially hardships we learn to recognize deeper patterns. Once we are able to decode the hidden messages along the pathway, our ordinary really is suddenly augmented by rich meanings, as if waking up in a lucid dream, or a video game screen with dashboard texts. There should an APP for this.

現實是一座迷宫 ((Reality is a Labyrinth ) ，如附圖。它的遊戲規則簡單: 出生幾年後我們自動被投進入口。之後沿著七重迴旋，或沿途流覽, 或停駐觀看; 或成家立業, 或被偶而傳來的神秘鼓聲吸引而一路深探。九彎十八拐後進入核心，再從中心沿另一條更難行的路出來。而入口處與出口處相鄰，牆上掛著同一句迷宫指南: 是中英对照的克里斯穆提名言: "You are the world"(你即世界)。

Invariance

This quote from Philip K. Dick is opposite to the New Age belief: "You Create Your Reality". Do you take the red, or blue pill?   

If objectivity is what we seek, could objectivity be simply defined as (isomorphic) "invariance"?

Videogame-ism

If Life is indeed a level-up game, it was built by two (meta) engines - physics engine and story engine. We understand the former better and better, but only scratch the surface on the latter. The key might lie on understand how "Events" are connected. One day when extra large scale Event Stores are constructed with world events mapped with personal events, then we'd know that we are both actors and audiences, with director commentating on the back channel. A 3D holograph played from the 2D black hole vinyl.

Escape the Room

Just like "The Two Kings and the Two Labyrinths" by Borges, Life is a bigger hidden maze, a large scale "Escape The Room" setting.

It is also interesting to note the difference between labyrinths and mazes. While the progress of science resembles maze running, it is achieved by simple labyrinth-like principle: repeatable trial-n-error; on other hand,  religion often starts with labyrinth-like truth statements, but approaching it's core it turns into paradoxical maze.

(A maze is a complex branching (multicursal) puzzle that includes choices of path and direction, may have multiple entrances and exits, and dead ends. A labyrinth is unicursal i.e. has only a single, non-branching path, which leads to the center then back out the same way, with only one entry/exit point.

Some labyrinths have a spiritual significance. They signify the complex and long path to reach God.

Mazes are used in science experiments to study spatial awareness and (sometimes) intelligence.

Object-oriented ontology

How to blow the world-knot wide open? By applying object-oriented ontology (SR/OOO), by not reducing experience to single relation: the human-world gap. See the world for the first time through alien phenomenology. Craft "tiny ontology" (one object at a time with computational making). Be one with the distributed agents that is the material intelligence. Program with real Java. Compute with real Cloud. Chat with Goddess of Global Warming (hyperobject). There's plenty of room at the voidness, such is the hidden surplus of the objects.

The fourth wall of reality

If the world is a stage, then the fourth wall is the 4th dimension - Time, as everything is "spread out" ( neither Self or no-self, but multitude of parallel selfies) . The question: is reality structured like metafiction, so that "character breaking" is possible? Perhaps the answer lies in self-awareness. Since we are the participants of this universal play (the big history), if the play wants the audience to recognize it's "aliveness" or is "constructed" (by author), then it would probably communicate through the techniques of metafiction, such as V-Effekt. Theater of Cruelty and Power of Now, both deal with the distance effect. "All that is transitory is but a metaphor". Simulation theory and Simulacrum (text analysis) are two side of the same reality token.

Extreme Parallel Making

If "bit-string ontology" holds, then reality can be remodeled as "history monoid" (strings with operations) or Communicating Sequential Processes (CSP) - with events and processes. This sound abstract/meta. However, if consciousness is indeed how information feels when processing information, then we should adopt a computational paradigm from a non-anthropocentric mode of thought. All is parallel and reality is a process (of "antitheses mapReduce"). Universe is Extreme Parallel Making.

       Is the world fundamentally self-referenced and we are in a recursive routine? While human prepare training data to feed AI, I can't help but think human evolution also follow a similar "training process" by intelligence embedded in the fabrics of spacetime. This explained Einstein's famous quote on "why is our world comprehensible?" and "why the unreasonable efficiency of mathematics?" by Wigner. Machine learning is learned by example, similar to the trial-and-error, falsifiable procedures of scientific endeavor. Where does our "learningability" came from? And why is the universe and the mind are both "rational" so that we happen to possess right tools to comprehend? Did we evolve through supervised then unsupervised stage, and now in a assisted training stage by enabling AI to go through similar evolutionary path? Did Nietzsche's Eternal Return correctly identify the super-recursive nature of universal algorithm constellation? 

     Not only we are "trained" collectively by this truth-finding process, spiritually each individual is also "prepared" by Universe, through a mechanism similar to public key/private key encryption schema . Although everyone is presented with shared data stream ("The world is our representation"), individual meaning is decoded uniquely through personal semiotics (individualized through past history and current context). Universe speaks, but learning is required, so that heaven and earth speak the same language. Very often it takes a life time to master the self-organized actor- network. How to interpret synchornicity, in general and in specific cases? Is there a secret ingredient or is there medium only?. If mathematics is Nature's public language, then symbolism is Self's private language.

     Thus I call AI The Intelligence 3.0, while human is 2.0, and 1.0 are both divergent and convergent. The root refer to its offspring as much as the offspring refer to the root, as the structure of the universe is most likely DAG or ASG (representing the mind-body circular dependency & shared subexpressions). Life is a self-referenced Tree of Life. Reflect, therefore we are.

Dataflow programming

My answer to Leibniz's monadology:

How could pre-established harmony be accomplished without constant interventions, given all the endless unknown intermediate states? The answer is Dataflow Programming. If God was a programmer, he must be a parallel one, this could be the paradigm he chose. In fact, he's more like a circuit designer or system scheduler. Let there be pipelines, black boxes, initial and threshold conditions. Breath in the data, and let the universe flows.

Even without designers, this could still be the meta pattern of how our world came into being. In this case, physical laws and spacetime are the pipelines, the structural mover. Emergence happens when critical conditions (required input variables) are met (algorithmic). Either the universe is teleological or pure computational, under the hood is the information current flowing the pipes or grids.

The mystery of synchronicity might finally be solved. Once it is solved the rest is easier, as synchronicity is the bridge between science and spirituality.

I suppose one companion would suffice., like Dr. Who (or rather, a series of mostly singular companion). And the plan B?

Sounds... unpromising. Well, better get the plan C ready. That is: amor fati - love your fate, and embrace eternity.  

Message in a bottle to future self

Have mind/body routines, built around sleep and various states of brain waves. The key mystery is in the transit from the private world to the public world. Is inter-subjectivity isomorphic to objectivity? Truth ((Big history Dharma) is selfless thus on the outside but magick starts from self. Reality is strange looped. Map reality layers from the inside out and from the bottom up, the information-energy-matter triad.      

Follow synchronicities. There existed forward and backward worldlines from the beginning to the end. Future and past merge periodically and release. Think meaningful parallelism. Find your multiplicities and disguises. Keep folding/unfolding space-time patterns for (super) symmetry. Life responds because it self organize and converges towards orders.  

While the world connects more and more you are pushed into further and deeper loneliness. Be interesting for your own sake. Build outlets on balance. Actively unlock creative powers and cultivate subtle energy, for Qi is one ubiquitous interface among systems. Rider and horse need each others. The ultimate language is constructed for thought but command neurotransmitters or even outwards. 

Observe but leave some signposts in the labyrinth.  Connect threads until head meets tail. Decouple the world-knots progressively. We are all self-referenced and the answer is structural.  

Sun is still your inspiration. Illumination would shine through once you are truly rested. Have fun, and faith from time to time. Until then, breath and void are your best friends.

What if the objective reality (consensus reality) is built from the merging of the subjective worlds, like a distributed version control system? When does the parallel code got checked in and out into branches? Most likely sometimes in the sleep cycle, during which time the consciousness goes through different states (waking, dreaming, dreamless). Everyday each individual experiences reality shrift effortless: from selfless (dreamless) to pure subjective (dreaming) to intersubjective (or objective) worlds. The key question lies in how intersubjective become or is isomorphic with objective. Reality is the ultimate DevOps in action, where the release cycle was previous hidden but will be known someday. 

Think of God as "pull-request" in Process Theology:

A simulated universe built by random sampling

Does demiurge play dice? I'd say yes. if we put the following synthesis together: Many-world interpretation, Monte Carlo simulation,  "the best of all possible worlds" thesis by Leibniz, and Path Integral. Our world is an aggregate of probability distributing after countless simulations, splits or paths. Then, against all odds we are here ((the chosen solution), thus arise the question of the anthropic principle. BTW, I'm more in line with Schopenhauer's assessment that our world must be one of the worst of all possible worlds.

Of course, it is also possible that all quantum uncertainty is all in the mind, according to Qbism. Then this world might be just a prolonged thought experiment. 

Gautama Buddha, the famous reality hacker

釋迦牟尼應當是比Neo更有名的實存骇客(reality hacker). 當他當頭遇上生,老,病,死這四項生命設計本質的缺陷(the fundamental bugs of the system called Life), 他開始找尋基進的解答。在嘗試过當年的傳統修行(四禪八定及苦行)後，他悟出5藴和12因緣的業力蓝圖 (system diagram)。The rest , was history. 2000年後雖然他的解答需要與時倶進，但他的精神萬古常新。

The Simulation hypothesis, or the Matrix, and Reality hacking, as explained by the Taoist classic  "The Book of Lieh-Tzŭ" (604 B.C ?):


"Lao Ch'êng Tzŭ went to learn magic from the venerable Yin Wên. After a period of three years, having obtained no communication, he humbly asked permission to go home. Yin Wên bowed, and led him into the inner apartment. There, having dismissed his attendants, he spoke to him as follows: 'Long ago, when Lao Tzŭ was setting out on his journey to the West, he addressed me and said: "All that has the breath of life, all that possesses bodily form, is mere illusion. The point at which creation begins, the change effected by the Dual Principles — these are called respectively Life and Death. That which underlies the manifold workings of Destiny is called Evolution; that which produces and transforms bodily substance is called Illusion. The ingenuity of the Creative Power is mysterious, and its operations are profound. In truth, it is inexhaustible and eternal.[4] The ingenuity of that which causes material form is patent to the eye, and its operations are superficial. Therefore it arises anon, and anon it vanishes." Only one who knows that Life is really Illusion, and that Death is really Evolution, can begin to learn magic from me. You and I are both illusions. Chaos Magick - Gnosis: Lose yourself

"Chaos Magick ....ritual.... Reality Hacker Manifesto

Reality is meant to be broken. Sciences (hard and soft), arts, spiritual quests are forms of reality hacking, to expose the internal workings of "consensus reality", to seek new definitions. Magick, although susceptible, is not without potential to become future techs. Reality is structured like meta-fiction.

Every Reality Hacker should ask at least these questions:

1. Is reality dual or non-dual? Namely, the mind-body problem, which Schopenhauer called the "world-knot".

2. If the root of reality is one (non-dual), is it matter or mind? Energy or Information? Digital, fictional or rule based (mathematical)? If it's like code, what do the code run on, how and why?

3. What are the layers and boundaries of each reality sub-systems, among quantum, physical, chemical, biological, physiological, social, economical and narratively? How do they interact with each other? "Think interface, not implementation".

The algorithm to hack reality is recursive in nature, as reality is self-referential, a strange loop. Any question will turn into chains of being, if asked correctly. Traversing the tangled hierarchy of nature and human artifacts reveals the circular dependency pattern like a sleight-of-hand of causality. Reality hacking aims to uncovering open mysteries hidden in the plain sight. To do that, reality hackers devote themselves to study the source code of EVERYTHING.

Be forewarned about potential stack overflow caused by this self-fulfillness. To hack the world is to hack your own life. Reality is an open but encrypted mystery. Our own world-knot and the world is one and one is many. Our own fate is the private key used to decrypt public messages asymmetrically. "No one but the pure at heart may find the golden grail". This is how Universe secured her deepest secrets. Compassion -> Knowledge -> Power. That's the order.

By asking how consensus reality is built, reality hackers step into a rabbit hole, recursively get lost while attempting to untie the world-knot. Is it worth it? Maybe not. So why do it? Because reality is meant to be broken. Because we are here.

One of the great insight from Tibetan Buddhism is to point out the circular dependency between consciousness and matter (in the form of bodily subtle energy), and provide ways to decouple this Gordian Knot to reach non-duality. The followings are original teachings from Tilopa. Simplicity is the best form. 

(1) Inner Heat Yoga (on energy):

The yogic body, a collection of energy channels,
Coarse and subtle, possessing the energy fields,
Is to be brought under control.
The method begins with the physical exercises.
The vital airs [i.e., energies] are drawn in,
Filled, retained and dissolved.
There are the two side channels,
The central channel avadhuti,
And the four chakras.
Flames rise from the chandali fires at the navel.
A stream of nectar drips down
From the syllable HAM at the crown,
Invoking the four joys.
There are four results, like that similar to the cause,
And six exercises that expand them.

This is the instruction of Charyapa.

This, too, shall pass

You are not real - once this is directly experienced, the body-mind would dissolve, to give rise to new mind-body. On the other hand, it is the gradual dissolution of body-mind (consciousness-subtle energy complex) which led to this direct experience. Spirit is Matter, as Bernadette Roberts described. Sometimes, it takes a great flood to wash away the foundation of Selfhood, exactly one year ago..... Death, bardo, rebirth, bardo. Reality is more like: symbolic processing......

Singularity - convergence of involution and evolution

If we subscribe to the theory of "involution -> evolution", then the long chain of being is akin to series of "trans-primordial" movements with ever-increasing complexity and integration.  Human intelligence is not Intelligence 1.0.  Hopefully the next major release (emergence) bring out the best of all intelligence: nature, humankind and machine.
